Five Charged in L.A. Murder-for-Hire Plot Linked to Rapper King Von's Death

Five individuals from Chicago face federal charges in California, accused of being hired to kill rapper Quando Rando in Los Angeles due to his alleged role in the 2020 murder of rival artist King Von.

The indictment, unsealed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, charges Kavon London Grant, Deandre Dontrell Wilson, Keith Jones, David Brian Lindsey, and Asa Houston.

They face charges of conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire, murder-for-hire resulting in death, and the use of a machine gun in a violent crime leading to death. The most severe charge carries a potential death penalty upon conviction.

The indictment claims all five are connected to "Only the Family" (OTF), a hip-hop collective founded by South Side rapper Lil Durk, who mentored King Von. Prosecutors allege that flights and rental cars were booked using credit cards linked to OTF.

Authorities report that two of the charged individuals are members of a Chicago street gang.

All five were arrested Thursday in the Chicago area and appeared later that afternoon at the Dirksen U.S. Courthouse. U.S. Magistrate Judge Jeffrey Gilbert ordered them to be held in custody while the case is transferred to Los Angeles for further proceedings.

The charges represent the latest repercussions from the high-profile murder of King Von, 26, whose real name was Dayvon Bennett, during a confrontation outside an Atlanta hookah lounge on November 6, 2020.

According to the indictment, following King Von's death, an unnamed co-conspirator associated with OTF offered financial incentives and "lucrative music opportunities" to anyone willing to kill Quando Rondo, a Georgia-based rapper whose real name is Tyquian Terrel Bowman.

In August 2022, Bowman, his sister, and cousin Saviay’a Robinson, 24, were in Bowman’s black Cadillac Escalade near a gas station in West Hollywood when gunmen opened fire. While Bowman and his sister were unharmed, Robinson was struck multiple times and killed.

OTF, founded by Lil Durk over a decade ago, emerged as Chicago's drill rap scene gained international prominence. Federal prosecutors state that the group primarily "produced and sold hip-hop music" from Chicago artists.

FBG Duck, another Chicago drill rapper, was killed in a shooting on Oak Street in 2020, leading to multiple convictions in a federal conspiracy trial last January. Earlier this month, FBG Duck’s mother filed a lawsuit claiming that Lil Durk, OTF, and King Von were involved in the shooting, alleging that OTF operates as a criminal enterprise.

Lil Durk has become one of the most successful drill rappers since the genre's rise, which has also been popularized by artists like Chief Keef and G Herbo. Drill music is characterized by its hyper-violent lyrics, often reflecting and exacerbating conflicts between gang factions.
